La Merced Neighborhood

Founded in 1637, the temple was built in 1834 where the Virgen de la Merced is honored. During the celebration of the neighborhood, the dance of the Moors and Christians is performed in the form of a parade. During this parade people wear masks and dress up as "panzudos" or different characters. This is how they start from the white bridge and go through the main streets of the city. The festivity of the Merced neighborhood is one of the biggest and most joyful festivities in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.

The main trade of this neighborhood is the pottery, because there are completely handmade, decorated and sold candles and candlesticks. These are used in the various festivities of all the neighborhoods. The designs are very varied and colorful, you can find designs similar to traditional fabric prints.
